Paper Diamond has emerged from the shadows of niche bass music circles to become one of the more celebrated producers of our era. With a penchant for head-nodding hip hop, future bass, disco, and everything in between, the Colorado upstart has been making moves and we can’t help but notice. John Brown’s Body makes Chicago return on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Schubas

Silver Wrapper presents John Brown’s Body with special guests Ted Sirota’s Heavyweight Dub and Kinky P on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Schubas in Chicago, IL.

John Brown’s Body formed (in Boston in the mid 1990s) at a time when there wasn’t what you’d call a U.S. reggae scene. The American bands that played reggae were regional at best, touring little, and many were primarily cover bands of the best known Jamaican reggae. JBB was one of a handful of groups that began touring nationally and created distinctly American reggae, steeped in traditional vibes but incorporating elements from other genres. Whereas most groups tackled typical reggae themes – religion and marijuana – JBB acted more like an indie band, writing songs that used the vocabulary of reggae to express their own experiences. Over time, this style has become the norm. The U.S. scene has grown tremendously – to the point of having two bands debut records in the Billboard Top 20 in 2012 – and many in the genre point to John Brown’s Body as a key influence. If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that Kings And Queens is a synthesis of every aspect of John Brown’s Body’s storied career. It’s as if, after close to two decades of existence, this pioneering band has finally crafted their ultimate statement, tying together styles they’ve dabbled in, paid respect to, created, or pushed forward into one tightly woven mosaic. JBB’s Future Roots is now present tense.

Local reggae upstarts Ted Sirota’s Heavyweight Dub and Kinky P open the show.

Doors at 9:30 pm. Show at 10:00pm. Ages 18+.

Digital Tape Machine will take the stage for the last time with it’s original lineup on Friday night. As an After Party for the annual Jake and Brendan (UM) Holiday Show, DTM will perform hours of material and you’ll even get a glimpse of the new DTM lineup. Late Night Radio performs post Thanksgiving Day at Schubas on Friday, November 28, 2014

Silver Wrapper presents Late Night Radio with special guests Krooked Drivers on Friday, November 28, 2014 at Schubas.

Hustling to make his mark in Denver, Colorado’s electronic music melting pot, Late Night Radio is earning the respect of fans and peers alike through prolific production, innovative experimentation, and a dogged dedication to the craft. Alex Medellin has put in his time in the industry, coming up in Texas and California, but his ascension in the Colorado scene speaks to his ability to not only create a stunning array of original tracks, but bring them to life onstage, practicing what he preaches – guided by the mantra “emotion over energy.” Medellin’s background in hip-hop is crucial to his development as a producer. Unlike some of his contemporaries who came up in the dance music scene, Late Night Radio keeps his cuts funky and inventive with an unshakable commitment to soulful grooves. Even when LNR breaks into high-energy, cabinet-rattling climaxes, the emotional depth remains. His wildly popular Vinyl Restoration series of old-school mixes has rooted his sound in deep, expressive sampling that keeps him firmly grounded in the lessons of the past, while reaching forward to craft his own signature sound.

Denver based electro-hiphop duo Krooked Drivers open the show.

Doors @ 9:30 pm. Show @ 10:00 pm. Ages 18+.

David Shaw of The Revivalists collaborates with The Heard on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 1st Ward / Chop Shop

Silver Wrapper presents David Shaw (The Revivalists) with The Heard on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 1st Ward / Chop Shop.

David Shaw of The Revivalists and Chicago’s own The Heard perform together for a special not-to-be-missed collaborative concert featuring music from both artists’ catalogues and beyond. True to their name, The Revivalists lean more heavily on the older styles and warmer sounds of the golden age of rock ‘n roll, but the band isn’t afraid to dabble in electronics and sleight-of-studio when it’s right for the song. The Heard is a dirty, glowing machine, turning heads coast to coast by delivering fierce, passionate performances of its own brand of funk that are deep and remarkably tight, yet dripping with an arresting rawness.

Jacques Greene to play live set in Chicago on Friday, November 21, 2014 at 1st Ward / Chop Shop

[ NOTE: Moved from Bottom Lounge to 1st Ward / Chop Shop ]

Silver Wrapper presents Jacques Greene (Live) with special guests Savile and Them Flavors on Friday, November 21, 2014 at 1st Ward / Chop Shop.

Montreal wunderboy Jacques Greene brings his trademark blend of bass music, synth-heavy house and futuristic RnB live to Chicago. LuckyMe cohort Jacques Greene is considered one of those young producers who’d rather let the music do the talking than get wrapped up in transient fashions and trends. Maintaining a steady output of characterfully deep dance floor burners, Jacques is more concerned with mastering his craft than masterminding any meteoric rise to the top. With his releases on LuckyMe and Night Slugs, the Montreal-based producer fused pacey two-step rhythms with breathy synthwork and RnB vocals to create the kind of spangled neon atmospheres that every club worth its salt wants bouncing round the walls. Jacques knows the importance of keeping the dancers on their toes, and with a bunch of surprises up his sleeve, like a live analogue set-up, the launch of his own label, Vase Records, and his Ready 12″ on Martyn’s 3024 label, he shows that he’s the kind of producer who’s more than happy to run things at his own pace. Check out the just released first single of his forthcoming EP, “After Life After Party”, here.

With a tight headlock on the nu-funk movement, Kung Fu is quickly popularizing their unique sonic contribution to the music scene. Blurring the lines between electro-jazz-fusion and ‘70s-style street fighter funk, Kung Fu merges early Headhunters and Weather Report mentality with contemporary electronic ideology like yin and yang. The powerhouse quintet’s live show has been described as “lethal funk,” “explosive,” “jaw dropping,” and “musically mesmerizing.”
